French filmmaker Jacques Audiard's adaption of the 1978 James Toback cult classic "Fingers," is an odd, compelling film. Romain Duris stars as Tom, a real estate thug who grows unhappy with his life and trains to become a classical concert pianist.
Duris ('L'Auberge Espagnole") turns in a complex performance as the confused and initially unlikable main character. When he's not practicing with his Chinese prodigy piano teacher, Tom plants rats in apartment buildings and rips up the floorboards to get rid of immigrant squatters. "The Beat That My Heart Skipped" is a unique tale full of small, surprising moments and unpredictable turns.
The film plays in narrative competition at the Tribeca Film Festival and will open in the U.S. in July.
